Should You Wish To Live A Healthy Lifestyle You Need Diet And Exercise

By Aaron Guerrero

In case you haven't noticed, men and women today seem to be suffering from a lot more illnesses and diseases than they ever have. The fact that individuals are generally unhealthy and also out of shape is one of the principal reasons for this. A lot of people that are at the right weight generally have less illnesses and diseases than those people who are obese. In this article we are going to be talking about a few things that can be done to improve your health and drop some weight at the same time.

Most people these days have a lot going on in their lives that they can't find any time to exercise. Nevertheless this is very important for your total body health. Should you be one of those men and women who don't get any exercise, most of the food that you eat throughout the day ends up being stored as fat. You can even start getting a little exercise by just taking a walk or two each day. When it comes down to it, walking is superior to not engaging in anything at all.

Now we have to start taking a look at the foods your eating everyday. I am sure you have stopped at a burger joint to grab yourself something for lunch or dinner for the reason that you don't have the time to get a suitable meal. The actual food you can get at these types of spots is food that is generally loaded with fat as well as fillers that are simply not healthy. In cases where a cheese burger is what you want, cook it yourself on a grill that allows the grease and fat to drip from the burger so you don't wind up eating it. But there are other things you ought to be eating also and we will let you know about them here.

You should start off with 5 to 6 servings of vegetables and fruit, these need to be eaten everyday, not to mention all throughout the day. The vitamins and nutrition found in these kinds of foods can actually enable you to fight off certain ailments as well as diseases. While I understand many people don't like vegetables, just about every person likes fruit. If you're just a fruit eater, you need to make sure to vary the fruit you consume everyday, don't simply eat apples. Consuming fruit is far better than eating no produce, but if you can, try to choke down some vegetables every so often as well. Just a little trick that may also help you lose some excess weight is to not only eat your fruits and veggies with your meals, but to also try to eat those first, and then move on to the main course. The primary goal of executing that is to start filling you up prior to getting to the other foods that are not as nutritious for you.

Yet another thing that can help you to consume less food is to make sure you drink an entire glass of water before you sit down for your meal. Another thing about drinking water, is that it will help to detox your body, so you will be ingesting less and flushing out the body at the same time. Lots of people end up getting hungry in the mid morning, should this happen have some water along with a piece of fruit, that may hold you over. This can help you get through the day while not going to the junk food joints.

Amazing Natural Remedy For Skin Hair And Nails That Are Healthy And Beautiful

By Margaret Harris

The human body is considered beautiful or appealing depending on the condition of external parts such as hair nails and skin. Unfortunately though, may suffer from conditions that affect the appearance of these body features. Anyone searching for a natural remedy for skin hair and nails will find invaluable advise in this discussion.

There are two basic categories into which these remedies fall. One is internal while the other is external. For the internal remedies, consumption is required for the benefits to be reaped. The external ones are basically topical applications that are used in a similar fashion to cosmetics. Both types of remedies have been identified as successful by users.

Among the popular internal natural remedies for beauty purposes is folic acid. This is a b vitamin that is found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and broccoli. It works by encouraging the body to replenish, repair and restore cells, including those of the epidermis, hair and nails. Many nutritionists recommend folic acid for general health and so for many, the beauty benefits may be just a bonus.

A popular nature made remedy for beauty is royal jelly. Produced in the hive exclusively for the queen bee, who by the way outlives everyone else in the hive, this nutrient is full of b vitamins. Users of royal jelly swear that using it has led to better looking skin and healthier, longer tresses. Royal jelly is available in two forms. Its natural form is a gel or cream like substance and many dealers sell it this way. It is also available as a capsule as the nutrient is freeze dried and compressed.

Yet another great topical treatment for beauty purposes is castor oil. This oil is taken from the seeds of the castor plant. Its use as a beauty and health enhancer dates back to many centuries ago. When this oil is rubbed into the skin it helps to reduce the signs of aging or keep them at bay. It also helps to minimize the appearance of scars. It also strengthens tresses and promote length.

Cocoa butter, the substance extracted from the seeds of the cocoa fruit, has been promoted for a long time as a beauty product. It is moisturizing by nature which is why when it is placed on the hair and nails it reduces dryness and as a result prevents breakage. It also has a long tradition for being used by pregnant women for preventing stretch marks. Even after stretch marks and scars occur, this substance is used successfully to reduce them.

Shea Butter cannot be overlooked in any discussion on remedies for external body features. It reduces and eliminates itchiness, the signs of eczema and other skin conditions. This is because of its high vitamin A content. It also has vitamin E which is popular for dermis and epidermis health.

With so many amazing natural ways to ensure that hair nail and epidermis are healthy, there is really no excuse for complacency. Some remedies are available naturally which means that they are economical to use. Quite often, they are cheaper than the alternatives and have fewer and sometimes no adverse effects. This makes them the ideal choice for many.

Keep Your Back Healthy With A Peabody Chiropractor

By Elke Hermann

If you are having problems with your back, you are not alone. In fact, the National Institute of Health reports that 25 percent of the US adult population will have a least one day, dealing with a painful back (in a given three month period). This is the most common type of medical condition, and that is why back health is very important. Your Peabody chiropractor is there to help.

Proper spinal health is dependent on the alignment of one's spine, and several factors can affect this alignment. For example, weak muscles in the abdomen and back can place stress on specific areas of the spine causing misalignment. This can cause a reaction that is not unlike a set of dominoes falling over.

A spine is made up of bones (vertebrae), soft disks, and many nerves. If anything goes wrong with the spinal structure, the nerves within can be affected. For example, a neck misalignment can cause headaches or dizziness. A low back misalignment may cause the back, legs, or even feet, to throb with pain, numbness or burning sensations.

As people age, back problems become more common. Some back conditions are related to heredity. Many kinds of back discomfort are caused by gradual wear and tear on the spine, but this does not have to happen to most people. Sedentary lifestyles are a major cause of pain, as poor muscle tone can affect the spine. Also, some back problems are caused by injury to parts of the back.

If you want your spine to stay healthy, exercise, eat a balanced diet, and see your chiropractic doctor on a regular basis. Modern chiropractic care can help you avoid many kinds of back conditions. Plus, if your back is hurting, you can enjoy the latest in time proven holistic procedures.

Modern chiropractic stresses the importance of natural therapy for pain relief. By addressing the cause of your pain, it can sometimes be relieved without the use of drugs or invasive procedures. To make an appointment with your chiropractor in Peabody, MA, you only need to call the office.

Short But Sweet 10 Minute Meditations for Healthy Aging

by Baxter
Even though I'm away leading a retreat this week, I'm thinking of all our readers at YFHA (kinda' wishing you were here!), as I'm focusing a good portion of our practice time here on developing a home yoga meditation practice. Since we have two yoga practice sessions a day here, we begin and end each if them with a 10-minute seated meditation practice. Monday was our first full day of practice together and the overriding focus was on the feet, anatomically, and the idea of "starting”—whether that meant starting something new, starting again, starting over—about taking the first steps on that new path. For me, the feet represent the base of our overall strength, as well as stability. So I suggested that the group might use the phrase "strong and stable" as their mantra (a repeated word or phrase for mental focus), during the final seated meditation of each class.

As you might have calculated, by doing four 10-minute meditations in class, my group is getting 40 minutes of time to practice this powerful method in manageable amounts of time. (I happen to have them doing two more 10-minute sessions on their own for a total of 60 minutes a day). This is a sweet amount of time, but at home, you can easily practice just one or two sessions in a day and still reap benefits. Try the "strong and stable" mantra for your sit today! I'll try to share other ideas this week as well.

Jill Satterfield Joins Yoga for Healthy Aging!

by Nina
Jill Satterfield by Jamey Lord
I’m excited to announce that I’ve invited Jill Satterfield to join our staff and she has accepted. That means you’ll be hearing from her regularly from now on, probably once a month. And from now on, she’ll write under the name “Jill” and be listed on our About Us page. She already has a page Jill's Workshops and Classes with her classes and workshop information on it as well as Guided Meditations by Jill with some of her guided meditations.

I invited Jill to join us both because we’re big fans of her writing (my favorites include Spiritual Sanity and When Red Flags Should Be Raised) and because she has some expertise in areas that we don’t due to her knowledge of Buddhism well as yoga. Besides being a very experienced, long-time teacher of mindfulness and embodiment practices, she also has a lot of knowledge about helping people with chronic illness and pain, something she has had personal experience with this. And she is currently training to be a hospital chaplain (which I hope she’ll write about sometime).

The funny thing is that I got to know Jill because of Facebook! After she moved to Berkeley, she posted a photo of a quirky shop near my house. I commented on her post that I lived nearby, which lead to personal messages and then a get-together for tea. Kind of like a blind date only for friendship! We’ve been friends and colleagues ever since, always talking about “work” issues as well as personal ones. I especially appreciate the intellectual discussions we have about differences and similarities between yoga and Buddhism, which has led me to new insights. And some of her posts came out of discussions we had when we got together as friends because I said, "You need to write about that!"

To find out about Jill, see her website: vajrayoga.com. Here are all the posts that Jill has done for us so far:

Enjoy The Healthy Vending Boston Offers

By Angel Dudley

These days, it is very interesting to see how many folk are taking care of their health. This is very good news as it is an indication that more and more people are looking after the way they look. There are many things that one needs to do in order to look good and the most important of them is the way you eat. When looking for healthy vending Boston has many to choose from.

Modern life is very demanding on people nowadays and they seem to be very rushed getting from one place to another and tending to their responsibilities throughout the day. Due to the demands, many folk do not get time to prepare perfect meals at night and often simply make food that is filling and tasty. This is the way it is in many households as the chef needs to make the food the family eats.

Many households are compromised when it comes to meal times. The objective of the cook in the house is to make food that everyone likes and will eat. No one likes to prepare food that most of the family does not eat.

A dietician will be able to help you lose the weight you are looking to get rid of by analyzing you in person. They check your ideal weight and compare it to the present. After this they will discuss the foods that you like to eat.

One should remember. When going to one of these specialists, that the program they put together for you is intended for your use only. Every individual has their own way of eating and the plan is meant for you and cannot be used for anyone else. This is why they are personalized, to suit your metabolism and body shape.

Due to the rushed lives that most people live there is often not enough time to prepare good meals for themselves throughout the day. Most of the folk, including students, rely on machines to provide food for them in a hurry as they quickly place some coins in the sloth and the food pops out the bottom of the machine. These days it is great to see that these machines now provide food for good health and are delicious at the same time.

Should you not be in the position where you can spend time preparing many different meals for yourself for during the day, you must inform your dietician of this. They will then include things like fruits to substitute the meals that you are snacking on that are not good for you. A fruit is easy enough to get hold of and takes up very little space in your suitcase or bag.

Eating plans are great and they allow for you to eat as much as you like of the food that is good for you. Even though you may be rushed and not get time to prepare special meals, you will be allowed to select something from a fast food outlet as well. Should you be in search of healthy vending Boston is now the leaders in providing this good food from a machine. This is great as it suits anyone.

Information On How A Dallas GA Chiropractic Office Helps Keep Your Neck Healthy

By Bob Albert Lewis

Headaches, shoulder cramps and eyesight issues are all additional problems that can stem from a stiff or troublesome neck. Dealing with such pain often means taking a fair amount of medications. However, individuals who would like to find an alternative form of relief may wish to consult with a Dallas GA chiropractor to assess the situation.

Chiropractic medicine is a field that studies the alignment of the skeletal system and how it affects the body. Through adjustments of the spine, many pain related issues and neuromuscular disorders may be addressed without resorting to medication or surgery. Generally speaking, these methods fall under the category of alternative health care.

Before any type of adjustment is performed, the doctor will first administer a thorough examination and order the necessary blood work and diagnostic imaging. All of this data will be used in an effort to make the most informed decisions. Should it turn out that the issue requires a more traditional approach, the patient will immediately be referred to an appropriate physician for further care.

A leading factor in constant neck pain is often misaligned vertebrae. Just the slightest twist might be enough to squeeze a nerve or pinch muscle or sensitive tissue. There are multiple chiropractic methods that may be applied to obtain relief.

The doctor will carefully apply calculated and precise force along the vertebrae to realign the spine properly. Correct positioning restores regular blood flow and relieves the pressure that may have been put on the surrounding muscles. Deep tissue massages might be administered to help reduce built up tension.

The necessity of follow up sessions are left to the doctor's discretion after they have thoroughly assessed the situation and the likelihood of recurrence. There are exercises, activities and ergonomic techniques that can be utilized at home between visits to keep pain under control. Health care without pharmaceuticals just may be the way to handle certain discomforts.

Healthy Eating Doesnt Need To Be Difficult

By Malcolm Gibson

The benefits of healthy eating are nowadays being given more publicity than ever before and there are good reasons why this is so. Poor diet is a leading factor in health conditions such as heart disease and hypertension which can place a drain on the economy. There are more and more campaigns to try to get people to adopt a more healthy lifestyle and nonetheless it is also easier than ever to rely on fast, convenient food that is often bad for our health. It is likely that lots of people feel it will take a lot of effort to eat a healthy diet or that they have to make a large scale change to how they live. In reality, though, simply making some small changes can positively impact day-to-day eating habits.

To see results, it is definitely not essential to drastically change your eating habits. Even more important than completely altering your diet is just substituting healthy eating choices whenever you can. In time, you will probably discover that you will eat more and more healthy food as your taste buds become accustomed to the change. Gradually, your eating habits will change and your new eating habits will totally replace the way you ate previously.

One initial thing you can do is to pay close attention to the choices you make when you're at the grocery since you most probably choose many food items out of habit. As an example, if you have a bowl of cereal for breakfast, do you ever stop to see what the sugar and salt content is before getting it? Having a bowl of oatmeal will supply you with the energy to face the day while protecting your heart simultaneously. Mix in fruits or spices to improve the flavor and now you have a breakfast that can be a regular part of your new healthy eating regimen.

These better food options can be applied to other foods such as your cooking oils. For instance, monounsaturated fat like as olive oil can be helpful in offsetting the bad cholesterol in your diet. Olive oil also is a good source of vitamin E which is beneficial for your skin, among other things. While you may already consume lots of fruits and leafy greens, you may want to consider how fresh they are. Organic foods are a superb choice and will reduce any possible exposure to toxic chemicals. You can ensure that you're getting the most nutritional benefits from your fresh produce if you can find a local supplier because you will be able to get the fruit when it is the freshest and ripest.

Evidently, it's not at all difficult to start incorporating healthy eating into your daily routine.

How To Keep Your Smile Perfectly Healthy With A Downey CA Dentist

By Mary Badder

Individuals who are looking to maintain healthy smiles will want to seek help from clinicians who are skilled in the field. By making an appointment with a dentist in Downey CA, men and women will be highly pleased with the results. They can count on a royal appearance for many more years down the road.

A healthy smile says a lot about a person. When men and women are interviewing for an employment position, for example, creating a good first impression will be key. Yellow teeth will generally reflect poorly on the applicant. Beautiful white teeth will also lead to excellent impressions on first dates.

Porcelain veneers are one way in which yellow teeth can be covered up. The veneers are made of thin pieces of synthetic material that will be cut to the proper size. The veneers act as a barrier against teeth that may have suffered wear and tear in the past.

Whitening methods are also available. If people want to avoid veneers, they can simply have their teeth treated under blue light. This changes the chemical composition of the synthetic resin that is placed on the bone. The entire mouth will look more brilliant than it did before.

Any cavities located within flat surfaces should be dealt with as soon as possible. In fact, both cavities and gum disease are easily treatable when they are caught early on. Any imperfections that are already evident in the teeth can be eradicated so that people will not be self-conscious.

In the end, finding a qualified dental professional will allow patients to maintain excellent oral health as they age. Professionals can examine the mouth every six months to remove the offending plaque before it turns into tartar. Men and women will be eminently happy with the results and should continue to go to the clinic.

Yoga for Healthy Aging is Not Science Fiction A Real Life Mission Statement

by Nina
Field of Mars by Marc Chagall*
“As more people are living longer and fewer are dying young from diseases caused by infections or insufficient food, exponentially more middle-aged and elderly people are suffering from chronic noninfectious diseases that used to be rare or unknown.” —Daniel Liberman

I’m just finishing up the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson, a science fiction epic that takes place in the near future about the very first human settlers on Mars. The series spans a period of about 200 years, and several characters you meet at the beginning of the series are still alive at the end. When these characters are in their seventies and eighties, a longevity treatment is developed by Mars scientists that allows the original Mars settlers to continue to live active, healthy lives for an unknown amount of time. Although these characters do develop certain long-term memory problems (mostly about their middle lives), they continue to do productive scientific work, are energetic, physically fit and disease free, and even have active romantic and sex lives. Near the end of the series, a few of them die quite suddenly, not of any long, lingering diseases but very quickly of heart failure. And that seems to be the end that most, if not all, of them, will be facing.

Oh, if only old age was really like that, right? But this science fictional scenario actually exemplifies the very issues I wanted to talk about today. For when we talk about “healthy aging” on our blog, Sax, Nadia, Ann, Coyote, Michel, Maya and others in the Mars trilogy are ideal role models, not because of how long they live but for how healthy, physically active, and intellectually engaged they remain until the ends of their lives.

Lifespan. I guess this is rather obvious, but our “lifespan” is the period of time during which we are alive. But that lifespan could include any number of years spent in poor health. Sax, Nadia, Ann, et al in the Mars trilogy don’t have problems with ill health because in their science fictional world modern medicine can fix almost everything (although one man does die of leukemia). But here in the real world there are many medical conditions that just can’t be cured yet.

Morbidity. Right now, although our lifespans in first world countries have increased significantly due to better nutrition and modern medicine, as Daniel Liberman said in the quote above, middle-aged and elderly people in first world countries can suffer many years of ill health before they die. Lack of exercise, poor eating habits, and stressful lifestyles cause heart disease, strokes, diabetes, osteoporosis, and other chronic problems. This period of ill health during your lifespan is referred to as morbidity.

Now let’s do a little bit of very simple math:

Lifespan – morbidity = health span

Health Span. To put it in words, your “health span” is equal to your lifespan minus the amount of time you spend in ill health. This is the period in your life during which you are generally healthy and free from serious or chronic illness. For the people in the Mars trilogy, since they are very healthy until they suddenly die of heart failure, their health spans are very close to the length of their lifespans. But I’m sure in real life we all know people who live for years in a very debilitated state, perhaps in a nursing home, and I think we can all agree is not a future we would want for ourselves, if we can help it. (See Longevity vs. Morbidity for information about the epidemic of morbidity in the first world.)

So, to be clear, when we talk about yoga for “healthy aging,” we’re not talking about yoga for increasing your lifespan or your longevity. We’re talking instead about doing what you can to keep your health span as long as possible. And while you are makiing your health span as long as possible, we hope you'll also be making the period of time you spend in ill health near the end of your life as short as possible (this is called "compressed morbidity").

And, yes, we believe that yoga can help with this. Our mission here at YFHA is to explore all the ways that yoga can help foster your physical, mental, and emotional health during your lifespan (see Opening Your Yoga Toolbox). And because we’re not living in a science fictional universe, we must acknowledge that there will be times when ill health is unavoidable. But yoga has sometime valuable to offer you during those times as well, including both spiritual wisdom to guide you and tools for cultivating equanimity that will help see you through hard times.

This is all pretty basic stuff, but it’s worth saying because we want to set realistic expectations. We’ve certainly seen prominent new age health gurus out there claiming that you can “reverse aging,” choose your “biological age,” or “change your relationship with time” with yogic practices. But that really is science fiction. And here in the real world you deserve more than that.

3 Healthy Eating Tips For Kids By GPM Pediatrics

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

GPM Pediatrics, in addition to other medical authorities, can probably tell you all about how important it is to eat as healthfully as possible. You want to make sure that you are not only keeping yourself but your family as healthy as possible. If you are curious as to what can be done, in this regard, it's clear that there are many pointers that can prove to be most useful. For those who may be struggling with getting their kids to eat healthy, make note of these 3 essential pointers in the long term.

One of the first steps that parents should keep in mind that clearing off a plate isn't exactly the most important thing. Keep in mind that children can only eat so much, which is why it's easy for portions to be larger than necessary. Your children will be able to determine just how much they can consume, so don't feel as though you have to force them to eat more. More food does not necessarily equate to more nutrition, so do not overlook this point.

For the best results, you want to make sure that you introduce your kids to new foods as early on in life as possible. There are many reasons for this, one of the most important being that children develop their tastes early, so it's important for this to be done at this point rather than sooner. After all, older children seem to be less likely to try new foods, regardless of how much they are encouraged to do so. This is yet another important healthy tip for parents when it comes to their kids.

Of course, children should not be forced to try new things, which those in GPM Pediatrics will be able to agree with. Yes, children must have broader horizons of sorts as they become older but the idea of forcing food is not the way to go about it. Instead, according to medical establishments like GPM, it's important for food to be introduced early on as well as incorporated in certain ways that may deviate from tradition. Creativity is the name of the game, in this regard, and parents should make it a point to go about this more often.

To say that it's a challenge for children to eat healthy would be something of an understatement for parents. However, tips like the ones mentioned before should be able to help in the long term, provided they are followed through with time and time again. Healthy eating can be done; this goes without saying. It's just a matter of the right level of effort being brought into place. With the aforementioned pointers, parents will have a much easier time going about this endeavor.

Satya The Truth About Lies and Healthy Aging

by Ram
Sun Through the Clouds by Brad Gibson
In the Sadhana Pada of the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali we are introduced to the yamas that serve as moral, ethical and societal guidelines for a harmonious living. The five positive guidelines help us to behave and relate to our surroundings and environment and to achieve oneness with it. Patanjali considered the yamas as universal vows and preached that they be practiced on all levels: by way of thoughts, actions, and words. Thus, the yamas serve as prized guides to lead a conscious, honest and ethical life. Satya, meaning truth, is one of the five yamas in the yoga sutras. Verse 2.36 defines satya as:

satya pratisthayam kriya phala ashrayatvam

Being well grounded/established (pratisthayam) in truthfulness (satya), the fruits (phala) of actions (kriya) naturally result (ashrayatvam) according to the will of the Yogi. —translation by Swami Jnaneshvara

Satya is also defined in Sanskrit as “sate hitam satyam,” which translates to “The path to truth is ultimate truth itself.” Thus, one who is always truthful in actions, speech, and thoughts, his or her will is naturally fulfilled since such behavior allows a natural flow of goodness or positive feelings. Truth is considered divine and should be spoken to maintain righteousness (dharma in Sanskrit). Truth connotes purity and is superior to silence. If we start living in truth, we may not have to tell lies at all at any point of time. Truth keeps us free from all kinds of emotional turmoil.

Telling the truth significantly improves a person’s mental and physical health, and has a positive impact on health and longevity, according to a “Science of Honesty” study presented at the American Psychological Association’s 120th Annual Convention. Anita Kelly and LiJuan Wang of Notre Dame recruited a group of 110 people from 18 to 71 years old, and told them that once a week for ten weeks they’d have to come in and, in a lie detector machine, report how many times in the previous week they had lied. Approximately half the participants were instructed to stop telling both major and minor lies for the duration of the 10-week study. The other half served as a control group that received no special instructions about lying. Both groups came to the laboratory weekly to complete health and relationship measures and to take a polygraph test assessing the number of major and white lies they had told during that week.

The results were astounding. Participants across both groups who lied less in a given week reported their physical health and mental health to be significantly better that week. Participants in the no-lie group reported improvements in their relationships, less trouble sleeping, less tension, fewer headaches, and fewer sore throats. Telling three fewer minor lies a week translated to four fewer mental health complaints, and three fewer physical complaints. According to the authors of the study when you are honest, you feel good about it and life gets better. Associated with this, there is less stress and fewer physical and mental problems.

Research on how lying affects health is scant, but lying is thought to trigger the release of stress hormones, increasing heart rate and blood pressure. Stress reduces the number of your body’s infection-fighting white blood cells, and over the years, could contribute to lower-back pain, tension headaches, a rapid heartbeat, menstrual problems, and even infertility. Moreover, research has linked telling lies to an increased risk of cancer, increased risk of obesity, anxiety, depression, addiction, gambling, poor work satisfaction, and poor relationships (see The Prevalence of Lying in America: Three Studies of Self-Reported Lies. According to these studies, lying and its negative effects are a two-sided problem: liars create physical and emotional problems for themselves and people with these underlying problems are more likely to lie. Lies not only imprison an individual, but the more we lie, the harder we have to work to protect those lies from being discovered. As a result, all the physical, mental and emotional energies are diverted into protecting those lies, and we live in constant fear that can lead to chronic stress, health problems and unhealthy aging

One method that has been suggested for cutting back on lies and telling the truth is to surround yourself with like-minded, honest folks who will encourage you to be a truthful person. There’s an adage “Truth hurts for a little while, but lies hurt forever.” So tell the truth and protect yourself from the insidious damage of chronic stress, as it will help you live healthier and even longer lives.

Yoga and Healthy Eating How Yoga Helps You Tune in to the Effects of Your Dietary Choices

It is always a bit bittersweet for me come mid-July when I return from my annual yoga retreat at the Feathered Pipe Ranch  in Helena, Montana. It is a magical place for my students, and me, and most of our every-day needs are met by the staff at the Ranch, freeing us up to dive deep into the yoga and community.

At this year’s retreat, I focused on many of the concepts we talk about here at Yoga For Healthy Aging, including therapeutic sessions on topics ranging from arthritis to digestion. One of the lovely things about going on these sorts of retreats is that all of your meals are prepared for you, and all you have to do is show up for meal times. The Ranch is no different, and they pride themselves of the variety of healthy, mostly organic foods that they prepare for us each year, from Indian to Thai to Mexican, to the “Toledo Lunch” (a throwback to my childhood favorite, grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup). In addition, they always have tempting desserts, from fruit cobbler to fresh baked cookies and cakes to something outrageous called Chocolate Decadence! The downside to this, at least from my perspective, is that the food is served buffet style, so there is the daily opportunity to overeat, despite the overall healthy options provided (minus some of the desserts, of course!)

I have to remind myself to be more mindful about my eating when at the Ranch. It is very easy to make a second trip up for some more of my favorite things, even when my first plate of food was more than sufficient to satisfy my hunger. Satiety is different than eating until I feel “stuffed.” which unfortunately happened a few times last week. But because I was also on retreat in my own way, even though I was teaching twice each day, I was able to have the time to meditate consistently first thing in the morning for about 15 minutes. I found that as I sat quietly focused on my breath or simple mantra (see How to Start a Meditation Practice), I became acutely aware of how my body was feeling and responding to the previous day's food choices. I also would recall if I woke in the middle of the night with indigestion, gas, bad dreams, or the urgent need to use the bathroom. This feedback allowed me to more consciously set an intention around my food choices for the rest of the day.

Since I tend to desire more processed sugar than is healthy for me, (is it really healthy for anyone?), I began to modify my breakfasts, the only meal I prepared for myself in the little teacher’s cabin kitchen, leaving out the jam on my toast and adding in a piece of fresh fruit to satisfy that sweet taste desire that I have. And I began to notice that my energy levels were higher for the rest of the morning as the week progressed. Quite motivating! I have to admit that dessert time was still a tough one, but was at least more mindfully dished and consumed than earlier in the week.

Surprisingly, I realized I was looking forward to being back in my own kitchen where I could more easily design my meals for not just quality, but also quantity.  All these insights about behavior changes and choices arose directly out of the introspective practices of yoga, like simple breath awareness. They were there for me, and they are available for you, too. As we keep reminding you, consistent practice is a key feature of transformational practice. I did my meditation first thing today again, and my continued healthy, well-proportioned meals choices are reflecting it!

I've been thinking a lot about healthy eating and healthy digestion because my two-part online course at Yoga U is coming up soon. To sign up for the course, you can register here. For a free audio interview with me on yoga for healthy digestion, download the interview here.
