Staying Upright About Our Postural Reflexes Balance and Yoga

by Baxter
Playing at Giants by Francisco Goya
In the course of researching agility and balance, I came upon the mention of “postural reflexes.” We humans have a lot of reflexes, so I was not exactly sure what these reflexes were. But I began to do some digging.

It turns out that you have a couple of reflexes that automatically correct the orientation of your body when it shifts from being up upright. They kick in to action when unexpected events throw you off balance so your body can prevent you from falling by quickly attempting to self-correct. Imagine turning and suddenly almost (or actually) bumping into someone, walking down a slick ramp and suddenly slipping a bit, or reaching that darn crack in the side walk that trips you up. They also kick in to action during everyday balancing activities, such as when you are standing on a chair in the kitchen trying to reach into the upper shelf or when you are walking on the raised edge of a curb just for the fun of it.

Our postural reflexes start to develop when we are infants starting to sit up, advance when we are toddlers learning to walk, and continue to be refined through adolescence into young adulthood. In the early days staying upright requires a lot of conscious effort, but with time and practice, our coordinated, muscular responses to being off balance or anticipating loss of balance become more subconscious and reflexive.

These postural responses that keep you upright (or try to!) are a result of information sent to your brain from your inner ears and eyes, the pressure sensors on your feet, and your proprioceptors (the nerves that tell you where you are space). As we age, our postural reflexes may slow down due to age-related changes in one or more of the components of this complex system.

However, in studies of older stroke victims who initially show a decrease in postural reflexes after their stroke there is evidence that practicing agility exercises helps them regain some of their lost function. So although there have been no specific studies of on yoga and postural reflexes, it’s likely that practicing a variety of yoga poses to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and agility would help you maintain and/or improve your postural reflexes. For maintaining postural reflexes, I would particularly recommend strength building practices, as well as balance and agility practices, both static and dynamic variations.

Getting More Fit While Staying Away From The Gym

By Dolly Nichols

If you are a gym member or have been one in the past, you no doubt realize how beneficial it can be to your health. These days, almost all gyms have a variety exercise equipment making them a very attractive option for your fitness needs. Nonetheless, for many people, this is not always an option because of the expense involved or their location might make it difficult to use them regularly. Even if going to the gym doesn't work for you, there are a lot of other things you can do to get fit, In this article, we will talk about ways to start exercising regardless of your situation.

Wherever you happen to be, a quick way to get started is by running. The only real investment is the gear you will wear particularly your running shoes because they are essential to avoid injury or putting stress on your joints. It is now an everyday sight for us to see men and women of all abilities jogging around our roads and there are ways to make it more pleasurable for yourself. The first thing you must do is come up with some measurable goals regarding how far and how long you would like to run. If you can alter the roads and places you go on your runs, this can make it more interesting and keep you motivated. If you enjoy others with you, then you can always buddy up with a friend or sign up for a local runners group.

Gyms are typically well stocked with all types of resistance training equipment. This should not stop you from doing strength training in your own home as this is perfectly possible. If you have lots of space and money is not an issue, consider purchasing your own multi gym and install it in your home. But remember that you can get going with merely a simple set of hand weights. There are magazines and books from your local library that can guide you on what to do if you are uncertain.

A major trend today is to learn how to exercise online with the help of ebooks and videos you can view on your laptop. This can be very cost-effective because these are usually produced by expert trainers and it is like having them in your own home to help you. If you don't have the money to hire a personal trainer, this is the way to get it done. You may have used exercise videos or DVDs in the past but a recent development is using a game console to be fit. For instance, the Wii Fit game has become an extremely popular way for the entire family to become fit whilst having loads of fun. When you use this system, you get to play and get fit at the same time.

Now that you are aware it isn't hard to become fit without an expensive gym membership, it's time to get started.

Staying At Lyons Holiday Parks

By Essie Osborn

The summer months bring visions of vacation days when all that is expected of you is to relax and enjoy yourself. Warm weather and blue skies bring on the desire to get away from the city and spend time in the country side or on the beach. Some of your best destinations for those wanting to get away are the Lyons Holiday Parks.

They are located along the coastal part of North Wales and in the English country side. Because of their locales they can offer any type of surroundings you prefer and if you are an owner you can access them at nearly anytime of year. Some sites are designated for adults and retirement aged people others cater to a younger crowd who may have children with them. Many have beaches and lakes for use by clients during their stay.

All locations supply housing in what are called caravans. They are small trailers that sleep up to eight people in comfort. The management supplies all the things needed to prepare a meal for your family as well as linens, bar-b-ques, heat and electricity. The unit comes with refrigerator, stove and a microwave oven for your convenience. You will also be treated to parties when a holiday occurs during your stay.

Many visitors own their own housing at these resorts. They use them at their leisure through out the year. Some owners arrange to rent their units to people for short periods when they are not in use by family. There are many units that are for sale in these locations and if you decide to purchase one you will be reimbursed for the rent you paid from the purchase price.

The advantages of ownership at these parks include access nearly all year round. There are no yard duties because the grounds are maintained by management and because management inspects the properties yearly to insure that they are kept in the best condition possible. There is no in park vehicle traffic and all vehicles are parked in a communal parking area which prevents excess noise and exhaust fumes.

These sites are usually located near towns or recreational areas that are accessible to their guests. They also provide a full calendar of activities for all of their clients. They have swimming pools and kids clubs that are available for use. Parents must accompany their children to these activities until the child is thirteen. Most reception offices will provide a list of activities that are available for the entire family.

While making the decision about which of these resorts to visit you can select your favorite terrain as well as the best time of year for your vacation. Most are open to the public for ten of twelve months a year. Activities are available at all locations while they are open for rental and you have the pleasure of selecting the season and the scenery that is best for you.

The most important part of any vacation is the bringing together of people involved and everyone having good memories to take home with them. The sites mentioned here are available to anyone who wishes to get away and still stay connected with those they love. With multiple environments to choose from and a number of activities available it could be the vacation of a lifetime.

Getting And Staying In Shape Easy Fitness Tips

By Marya Styles

Are you looking to get in shape? Fitness is an important way to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but requires a lot of effort and time. If you are looking to get fit, this article has many useful tips to help and teach you the best methods to maximize your workout in the least amount of time.

Try to use free weights rather than exercise machines. While exercise machines are great a way to stay fit, your body can actually benefit more from free weights. Free weights work stabilizer muscles that most machines don't. Not to mention, free weights are also much less expensive and bulky. It is a better choice all around to add free weights to your home gym.

To prevent injury while lifting weights on a bench, make sure the bench is well-cushioned. When the bench is too hard, it can throw your spine out of alignment as you exercise, which in turn can damage the nerves in your arms. An easy test is to press down on the bench. Being able to feel the wood is a sign you need to move to a different bench.

A great way to get fit is to pick up an active hobby such as skiing or snowboarding. Not only will you be having tremendous amounts of fun, you'll be burning a substantial amount of calories as well. Surfing can also be a great active hobby to have.

To satisfy your sugar cravings, do so immediately after your workout. Immediately following your workout, eat protein along with twenty grams of sugars. The protein will be carried to your muscles with help from the sugar. It's ok to have a soda pop with your after-workout snack, just limit the intake of sugar for the rest of the day.

As you grow older, it is imperative to exercise the brain, as well as your body, to keep both fit. Playing word games and memory exercises will improve the mind and stave off dementia or other memory illnesses like Alzheimer's disease. For example, while walking, take notice of five blue objects and when you have returned home, try to recall them.

Determine what your goals will be for each training session. Shorter trainings will more effective than long sessions. Try to aim for multiple 15 minute sessions and focus on just one or two different training goals for each period. This type of training will provide more frequent reinforcement without overwhelming your pup all at once.

Keep track of your dirty and new fitness clothes by keeping the dirty ones in a bag separate from the clean ones. Keeping them separate makes them easier to find without having to dig through gross and smelly workout outfits. Then when the week is up, you can take the entire bag and wash them at once.

Many people think that you should work muscle groups that are active in many of the same workouts. This is not the case. You should actually try and work out opposing muscle groups, for instance, triceps and biceps. While one is working out, the other has the chance to rest.

Doing work outs that involve jerks or lunges can be very beneficial but can also be very dangerous to your spine. When bringing any heavy object over your head, you should clench your butt muscles together. This will ensure that you body has stabilized the spinal region and reduce injury.

A great tip to build better abs is to make sure you don't work them out every single day. Your abs are like any other muscle in your body and can break down if worked too much so be sure and only incorporate them in your workout two to three times a week.

One small thing anyone can do to stay fit is to avoid elevators and escalators and take the stairs whenever possible. Taking the stairs will obviously help tone the lower half of your body, specifically your calves, but aside from that it is also a great way to easily burn a few calories.

Even when you are not participating in a structured fitness program, find ways to keep moving. Make it a point to go on a walk or take a jog around your neighborhood. Use your breaks at work as an excuse to find something active to do, even if you just go outside and walk around the building a few times. The more physical activity you include in your life, the happier you will be with your level of fitness.

To stay lean, consume about 600 milligrams of calcium each day. Scientists have found that people who consume that amount (which equates to a few glasses of low fat milk) are more likely to be at a lower level of body fat than people who consume less than 600 milligrams each day.

Make sure you understand the fitness terms before you begin. you need to know what sets, cardio, and low-impact means, along with other terms found in the fitness world. You can look up fitness terms on the internet, or ask a personal trainer, and you will be able to find all that you need to know.

Everyone knows how important regularity is to a fitness routine, but illness is one excuse that should be allowed to break the fitness schedule. The body draws on the same resources to fight sickness that it uses to recover from exercise. Those who insist on exercising while ill, will take longer to get healthy and will see little benefit from working out.

Reaching your fitness goal is a real possibility. By using our tips, you will be well on your way to reaching that fitness goal you thought was out of your reach. So what are you waiting for? Get up and get moving and get one step closer to reaching your goal.
