Unique Glaucoma Eye Test Through Eyelid Launched at Arab Health Exhibition and Congress

February 05, 2013

BiCOM Inc., featured its latest through the eyelid glaucoma testing DIATON tonometer technology at Arab Health 2013 in Dubai. Handheld, pen-like tonometer allows to measure intraocular pressure IOP without contact with eye ball, eliminating virus and infection and is independent of biomechanical properties of the cornea or contact lenses.

Quick and painless glaucoma diagnostic DIATON tonometer http://www.TonometerDiaton.com received a lot of attention from 85,000 visitors to the 38th Arab Health Exhibition and Congress consisting from healthcare professionals, medical facility owners and managers as well as distributors from
Middle East

Attendees representing Jordan, Oman, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, Bahrain, and Qatar were very intrigued by the latest DIATON tonometry technology and many were screened for elevated eye pressure in seconds right at the exhibit.

Since DIATON is non-contact and handheld pen-like tonometer, it can be used in any setting - rural areas that desperately need glaucoma screening or Inpatient & Outpatient Clinics such as Hospitals, Emergency Rooms, Nursing & Elderly Homes, General, Family & Specialty Practitioners office as well as Ophthalmic and Optometric practice.

Major Benefits of Diaton Tonometer:

* No contact with the cornea (only upper eyelid)
* No anesthesia drops
* No risk of infecting or scratching cornea
* No consumables (no need to purchase replacement tips/covers..etc.,)
* No sterilization
* No pachymetry needed (no need to purchase pachymeter)
* No daily calibration needed
* Handheld / Portable + Easy to use

DIATON Tonometer provides reliable measurements and makes it possible to diagnose glaucoma in its early stages, allowing to devise an appropriate care and treatment plan. DIATON is effective in obtaining IOP measurements for many challenging patient populations, including: those with chronic conjunctivitis, erosions, edema and corneal dimness; people who have undergone corneal surgeries; and immobilized patients and children. Also, patients do not need to remove their contact lenses.

Roman Iospa, CEO of BiCOM Inc., said, - "We're excited to see so much interest from Arab Health show and are proud to offer our latest DIATON glaucoma testing technology to the growing healthcare market in the Middle East."
The UAE healthcare sector is lucrative for global companies given the government's investment in medical infrastructure in recent years. The mandatory coverage policy for Abu Dhabi residents and several public-private healthcare projects in the UAE have driven the Emirates' annual per-capita healthcare spending to about $1,500 - the second-highest in the Arabian Gulf, according to a Deloitte report in June. The figure is expected to grow at a rate of 5 per cent until 2014, it said.

BiCOM Inc., is currently accepting and reviewing partnership inquiries from medical distributors from Middle East and plans to launch DIATON tonometer in many markets in the upcoming year.

Ways An Ayurveda Test Can Bring Equilibrium To Bodily And Emotional Health

Using an ayurveda test, one can gain an understanding of how one's body responds. Every dosha, or body type, comes with physical and mental weaknesses and more efficient cures. There are only three doshas, but ten combinations reveal the unique body types people can have. When one knows one's prakriti, or dosha combination, one is able to enhance one's mental and physical health and bring improvements to one's relationships.

Individual doshas need unique diets. Adapting one's meal plan to one that is suitable to one's dosha helps to enhance health. Energy is also maximized when the right eating plan and lifestyle is established. Imbalance in the mind and body can make one prone to illness.

Dosha tests are highly variable. There are some intricate, highly detailed questionnaires that focus only on physical symptoms. Less in depth tests ask about physical symptoms in only ten questions. There are also tests that take note of character and mental health. Others look at personality and physical symptoms simultaneously.

In Ayurveda, each individual is believed to have a unique balance of three doshas. Everyone has a dominant body type. Balance needs to be achieved between the three types by eating and living in a way that is most appropriate to one's constitution.

Vata doshas tend to be small framed, sensitive and imaginative. They feel most comfortable in tropical weather and their skins can become dry. To gain a balance, Vatas should omit stress from their lives. When Vatas feel they have control over their achievements, they remain healthy. When they lose control, they have a tendency to lose weight and their digestive systems become unhealthy.

Vatas love change. Their tendency towards racing thoughts can make them highly energetic. They should keep themselves calm and warm, as they can react negatively to the cold. Ayurvedic Indian head massage that is performed daily using sesame and almond oils can raise their temperatures. When they have energy, they should use light flexibility training.

People with medium builds, ruddy skins and competitive traits are Pittas. They have good appetites and require a well balanced eating plan that includes all five tastes in their meals. Low calorie diets don't enhance the health of Pittas. Instead, they need a unique balance of protein, fruit, vegetables and grains.

Pittas favor sweet and bitter tastes, but spicy meals can make them overheat. Chilies, salsas and peppers can raise their temperatures uncomfortably. They need to eat freshly prepared foods. Because they have strong digestive systems, they can often handle raw foods, but should avoid them if they cause constipation. Other body types don't handle raw foods as well as Pittas do.

Pittas need to be restrained because their natures are intense. Their fiery personalities should be controlled by staying away from heat. They prefer cooler weather and need to avoid spicy foods that can raise temperatures. Intense conversations are not good for Pittas.

Kaphas tend to develop imbalances of their bodily fluids, which can cause concentration problems and illness. This body type is prone to depression, but Kaphas are also calm, patient and forgiving. An ayurveda test is the first step to a more balanced lifestyle.

Stress Test

by Nina
Under the Beach Umbrella by Joan Webster
“You did great,” my oral surgeon said. “In fact, you were the most relaxed patient I’ve ever worked on. You even fell asleep there for a while.”

“Wasn’t asleep,” I mumbled through my numb and swollen lips. “Was doing yogic breathing.”

He looked at me with fascination, then quickly handed me a piece of paper and a pen. “Could you write down what you did for me?”

“Uh, email you later?”

Of course I didn’t become so good at yogic breathing just so I could stay, uh, relatively relaxed during gum surgery (though it was certainly an interesting test of my skills). As someone who once suffered from agitated depression, I’ve been using yogic breathing, along with many yoga techniques, for many years to manage my stress levels for my emotional wellbeing.

Now it turns out that I’ve been practicing yoga for healthy aging while I was at it. Because I can tell you right now that along with exercise and diet, stress management is one of the most important keys to healthy aging. Chronic stress contributes to many common age-related diseases, such as high blood pressure and heart disease, and can cause a weakened immune system overall. It also affects the quality of your life. Possible effects of chronic stress include: chronic anxiety or depression, insomnia and/or fatigue, headaches, and digestive disorders.

And how does yoga help you manage your stress? Let me count the ways:
  • breath practices and meditation trigger the relaxation response
  • inverted poses (and semi-inverted poses) physically reduce your stress levels
  • restorative yoga poses relax your body and quiet your nervous system
  • active yoga poses (such as standing poses, twists, and backbends) release stress from your body and create a focus for your mind
  • yoga philosophy teaches you to cultivate equanimity in the face of difficulty
Over time, I’ll be providing detailed information and instructions for techniques in each of these different categories. And I hope very much that you’ll find one or more that’s useful.

And in case you’re wondering, yes, I did eventually email my oral surgeon. Next time you’re in a dentist chair (or are lying sleepless in bed, need a break after a stressful day, or just want to experiment), maybe you can try:

Breath awareness. Focus your attention on your natural breath, observing how your abdomen or chest rises with your inhalation and falls with your exhalation. When your mind wanders from your breath (to the dental procedure or any other topic), simply, and without judgment, return your attention to your breath. It is natural to be distracted from this practice, but it seems to work even if your attention wanders repeatedly.

Focusing on your breath will enable you to keep your mind of neutral topics rather than stressful ones, and after 10 or 20 minutes, the relaxation response (identified by Dr. Herbert Bensen of Harvard Medical School in the 1970s) will be triggered.

Extending the Exhalation. The heart slows during the exhalation (and speeds up during the inhalation) so extending your exhalation is a relaxing breath practice (and also provides the benefits of breath awareness above). Take a deep soft inhalation followed by a deep soft exhalation. At the end of the exhalation, instead of inhaling again, retain your exhalation for one or two beats. Repeat through the procedure. Keep it easy. At no time should there be strain. If needed, return to your natural breath at any time.

During my procedure I did the second breath practice (extending the exhalation). But I’m very experienced with yogic breathing, and we generally recommend that beginners to start with simple breath awareness.

How To Find DNA Test Locations

By Elsa English

There are actually many purposes why one has to take a DNA test. All of these purposes have significant reasons. So if there is any concern which you would like to know that concerns the DNA, then you can find the answer by undergoing a test or profiling. Speaking of this, there are actually several DNA test locations.

Basically, in all the fifty states, there is a big network of laboratories, physicians, and clinics who give out the service. Given this, anyone who needs to know any information reated to this endeavor would be provided the answer. But usually, it is the doctors, lawyers, and hospitals who are given direct access to these files.

Actually, there are also mobile services for this. Basically, the purpose of this is to give accommodation to patients who did not make it to any appointment with the DNA collection facilities. But then this service is not always available unlike the the service in standing clinics and laboratories. Aside from that, this kind of service can pass your record to your family doctor if you like.

Other than those, there are also international collection sites which gather DNA specimen in most of the major cities around the globe. They also have a large specimen collection network with overseas hospitals, medical centers, clinics, and panel physicians which are designated by the US and the USCIS embassies and the same protocol is followed in all cases.

So if you need the service of these testing centers, then you can just easily go to their base in your state. This way, getting done with the transaction would be easier for you. Now, if you would like to know, the exact location of the center, there are actually several sites in the internet that provide the locations of centers in every state.

These sites give you the particular places in the state where this service is given. Aside from that, there are certain links the in the site which will lead you to specific websites as well. This way, you will know about their system so that you can plot when to go to avail your transaction. Or you may just call them and schedule an appointment by calling them through their contact number.

This way, you will have a convenient time when undergoing a testing. Aside from that, you can also be very sure about the result of your profiling since the individuals who conduct and analyze the outcome of the procedure are certified physicians who specialize in the field. This means that there would be no discrepancies in the result that will be handed to you.

This way, you can obtain the answer to your questions which maybe about your real parents, your real child, or your family tree. Aside from this, you will also have the privilege of knowing whether you are susceptible to any kind of disease. That is because the analysis of your DNA will give you all the information you need to know.

So if you are in need of this procedure, you can definitely avail it from the many centers there are in every state. The result of the test would be given to you in atmost two months because the doctors need this time especially if you are tracing your origin. But then after that, you can benefit from all their services.

The Get Up and Go Test

by Baxter
Transportation by Melina Meza
A while back I shared with you a study done that looked at “transfer” ability as a predictor of longevity (see From Independence to True Longevity). Today while reading “Putting Prevention into Practice,” AAFP Journal, Dec. 15th, 2012, Vol.86, #12, one of my medical journals, I came across a brief article on preventing falls in community-dwelling older adults. “Community-dwelling” means living at home, not in a care facility. As I read some of the recommendations from the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), I came across a test I had not previously heard of: the timed Get-Up-and-Go test. According to the  USPSTF, this is a way to assess the risk of falling by testing the ability of a person to "get up out of an armchair, walk 3m (10 feet), turn, walk back, and sit down again." It seems the average healthy adult older than 60 years can do this in an average of 10 seconds or less. As I think about in connection to the four skills of healthy aging, strength, flexibility, balance and agility, the test requires some use of all four of those skills.

By the way, if you’d like to read more about the four skills of healthy aging, we have quite a bit of material on them here on our blog, including an overview about strength called Strength and Aging, another overview about flexibility called Flexibility and Aging, yet another overview about balance called Aging and Balance, as well as an introduction to the concept of agility called Yoga for Agility.

Other than vitamin D supplementation, which the USPSTF felt to have a moderate net benefit in preventing falls, the only other proactive therapy to reduce the risk of falls that the USPSTF recommended was exercise or physical therapy regimens. They feel there is convincing evidence for these two approaches, and, as we have discussed many times before, yoga has similarities to both. So get the word out to your friends and family over 65 to start, continue or increase their exercise regimen by adding some yoga to the mix!
