A Beautiful Inner Support System

by Nina
Ladder by Marie Lossky

“Sometimes we don’t fully appreciate the progress or importance of our practices, but there will be a time when our practices show up and show their strength and depth. So practicing both in the times that are easeful and in the times that are not creates this beautiful inner support system that is there for us when things get really rough.” —Jill Satterfield

The interview Recovering from Heart Surgery that I did with Jill Satterfield recently got me thinking. There were definitely some gems of wisdom in there! And in particular the beautiful quote above got me thinking.

Although our equanimity practices are very effective for supporting us present, allowing us let go of regrets about the past and worries about the future, and to face challenges in the here and now with a sense of balance, practicing regularly will also help prepare you for challenges you may face in the future. So even though it can be tempting to use your equanimity practices on an as-needed basis, we recommend you practice regularly even during “easeful” times. You’ll then have those practices available as a “beautiful inner support system” whenever you need them. (See 7 Ways to Cultivate Equanimity with Yoga.)

In Jill’s case, she is a long-time practitioner of both Buddhist meditation and yoga. She practices pretty much daily, with meditation, asana, and pranayama all playing a part. And she saw all those practices show their strength for her when she endured a couple of years of uncertainty after being diagnosed with a heart defect and being told she would “know” when the time was right for surgery, and then going through the surgery itself. She says they helped her because after many years of being mindful of her thoughts, emotions, and the sensations in her body, she developed a keen sense of what could be beneficial and when something was too much or too soon. She also said,

“Having meditated for 30 years, my meditation practice showed up the most as far as supporting me in the post surgery stage. I wasn’t afraid, I wasn’t anxious, I wasn’t angry, I was surprisingly okay with the reality of my situation. My mind, and the training of my mind—of being in the present —not far-flung into the unknown future of fear and anxiety, really was a great blessing. I was at ease with what was happening and that was great considering it went on for two years.”

That to me is the very essence of equanimity.

Finding OCD Support Groups

The International OCD Foundation's new list of support groups is now live! I had started a list of OCD support groups for adults in the US and Canada when the IOCDF's page was under construction. I am going to leave it up for now, but I encourage readers to go to the IOCDF's support group page. You can search by location or alphabetically.

If there isn't a group in your area, there is a link to a manual by Dr. Jonathan Grayson on how to start your own GOAL group. The support group I've attended is modeled on the GOAL group structure of having a time of sharing followed by making a concrete goal for an exposure to do before the next group meeting. It was very helpful to have accountability and support from other people who understood what it's like to have OCD.

Benefits Of Pain Support Groups Online

By Colette Foreman

Having to endure chronic pain in every day of your life is never pleasant but depressing because they are the only one feeling it while on the other hand the people around them seems to enjoy life and get by as usual. On this regard, pain support groups online are platforms where such individuals are linked with others experiencing the same challenges who totally understand what it is like to live such a life.

Having to explain yourself to people who do not understand what you are going through can be very frustrating as they have no idea how painful it is to have such a life. To some extent, one may even feel like they are insane due to the fact that one is constantly in their own world where they are the only ones who can explain what they feel.

It is for this and many other reasons that these online groups are indispensable as they help bring people with this condition together and creating a platform where they can socialize and basically share their experiences. This helps in eliminating the loneliness that most victims usually have and learn new ways of coping with their condition.

This can be very motivational as some people may even be contemplating suicide but with the help of the advice they get, they no longer feel alone in this and can continue enduring the pains. Apart from the support in terms of the validation and inspiration one gets, education is also passed and as a result, one gets to learn better ways of managing their condition.

At this point in life, having a circle of friendship who totally understands you and everything you are going through is very important as you get to support each other when one is not at their best moments. In addition, this platform is usually convenient as it is available 24/7 and therefore attends to anyone at all times.

Despite the challenges that one may be facing, there always is hope and one can still learn how to enjoy and appreciate the happy time in their lives as people tend to focus on bad experiences forgetting the good one and therefore remaining miserable. This is the kind of mentality that can get one through these tough times in life by keeping them hopeful and not gloomy despite the challenges.

Bringing together people from different backgrounds with distinctive personalities makes the group more fruitful as people have different contributions to bring to the table. For instance, some may be good at inspiring others, while some are supportive while other may just be downright hilarious which is indispensable as people need to laugh often and enjoy life despite their challenges.

Basically, through this program people get to validate their feelings as it might be infuriating when one is around people who have no idea what they are going through. Moreover, even when one is seeking help from others, they also get to offer help which is pretty much satisfying and a way of boosting ones emotional stability as it can be difficult to remain sane when experiencing such pains on a daily basis.
